The History of Cubicflow
The History of Cubicflow.
Matt Ellison
Cubicflow CEO
As Cubicflow is relatively young, the history is very much relatively short, at least for now.
Technically, it all started around November 2005, when Matt Patry, a fellow artist, began the Cubicflow art group. Plans were made, a domain was purchased, and people were brought on to start up the website. Originally, the name Cubicflow (Then called "Cubic Flow") was thought up by Alex Asselin, fellow designer and previous Art Group Director. I myself was brought on as the Magazine Director; our original plan was to have an online publication, which was a collaborated idea between myself and Patry, that would be both online and available in print. We also had an art group, community forum, and main website (which, albiet, lacked regularly posted new content and updates). To make a long story short, the "old" Cubicflow carried on for a bit, and while a single issue of the magazine was released (online only), and a few art packs were on display, rough times caused the site to slow down. Cubicflow.net was the victim of a couple major attacks (or at least the server was), bringing the site - and the content - down. With resources (mainly time and energy) stretched thin already amongst the administrators, and Patry becoming more and more bogged down with work at design school, interest began to wane and the site was later taken offline.
Fast forward to November/December 2006. Winter holidays were approaching, and I was still moving along in graphic art and design, not really settling into a particular forum or community, just doing my own thing really. It wasn't a lack of creative insight, the drive was there - it was just that, after leaving one community at the beginning of the year, and helping start another only to find it die slowly, I wasn't much in the mood for all of the drama - I just wanted to create some great art. But then, as I said around December of 2006, Alex Blake messaged me online, interested in getting Cubicflow back together. I admitted I had considered it, though lacking support, I hadn't moved forward - but thats when the messages began pouring in. Numerous people had begun asking me about Cubicflow. So, I registered a new domain, cubicflow.com (the original cubicflow.net had expired and was cyber-squatted), making sure to get the OK and rights of the Cubicflow name from Patry of course. Thus, I took the helm, and the work began on what you now see today. With 6+ months of development behind the "new" Cubicflow, I am very pleased, and cannot wait for the next big step in the history of Cubicflow.
